Designing your own home truly gives you the chance to get a property that meets your needs. Working with an architect allows you to put forward your ideas and thoughts while benefitting from the experience and realism of a professional.
This project was a new home build in Howick based on a custom design provided by the owner.
The property is a two-storey building with the exterior featuring a mix of weatherboards, schist and plaster cladding. Choosing a range of exterior finishes can add interest to the property and define different areas.
On the second storey Vitex decks with cedar cladding lead off the main living areas. A large skylight and glass balustrades add extra light and a natural feel to the outdoor area. In the design, the living areas are on the second storey to take better advantage of the light and views, while the bedrooms are on the ground floor.
The light and airy feel is continued inside. There is a double height entryway, as well as a grand staircase with glass balustrade. The light colours on the walls allow for accents such as the kitchen splashbacks and feature walls.
Inside the home features an open plan kitchen and living area with a feature fireplace. Another interesting aspect – and an example of how custom design allows you to tailor a property to your requirements – is the media room. This features a projector and large screen, surround sound system and its own small kitchen area.
